Bundeskunsthalle Bonn 2015
In their work "Es" Liebl and Schmid-Pfähler present a kinetic, electromagnetically driven sculpture in its own custom designed environment. The installation questions the authenticity of technology by creating a conditional view onto the object. The viewer is confronted with an unfamiliar, alien object whose reduced and technical appearance contrasts its mystical motions. Each coil creates a unique high pitched buzzing sound when electric tension is charged and relieved. Therefore the combined sound of all coils forms an auditive representation of the robot´s motion. Although all electrical components and their mode of operation is laid open to the viewer, there remains an uncertainty whether the movements of the object are controlled or follow a random pattern.
